บทคัดย่อ

      การศึกษาค้นคว้าเกี่ยวกับเรื่อง “สถานภาพของสตรีในพระพุทธศาสนา” นั้น และมีวัตถุประสงค์หลักเพื่อนำเอาสิทธิของสตรีตั้งแต่สมัยก่อนพุทธกาลและในสมัยพุทธกาล เพื่อต้องการศึกษาความเสมอภาคของสตรีในพระพุทธศาสนา ความจริงแล้ว บุรุษและสตรีต่างกันแต่เพียงเพศเท่านั้น แต่ปัญญาและศักยภาพด้านรู้แจ้งธรรมไม่ต่างกันเลย ดังจะเห็นได้ว่า ในครั้งพุทธกาล ขณะที่บุรุษจำนวนมากออกบวชและบรรลุธรรม สตรีจำนวนมากก็ออกบวชและบรรลุธรรมได้เช่นกัน

      อิทธิพลของพระพุทธศาสนาในโลกสมัยใหม่ ที่มีต่อฐานะของผู้สตรีนั้นเห็นได้ชัด โดยการเปรียบเทียบฐานะของสตรีในสมัยก่อนพุทธกาลกับสังคมของชาวพุทธ ดังนั้นผู้วิจัยจึงได้รวบรวมความแตกต่างในท่าทีที่มีต่อสตรีตามที่ปรากฏในคัมภีร์ของพระพุทธศาสนาและศาสนาพราหมณ์ ในตอนแรกได้กล่าวถึงฐานะของสตรีในสมัยก่อนพุทธกาล การอนุญาตให้สตรีบวชในพระพุทธศาสนา นับว่าเป็นประวัติศาสตร์ตอนสำคัญของสตรีอินเดียและทั่วโลก เพราะพระพุทธเจ้านับว่าเป็นพระศาสดาพระองค์แรกที่มองเห็นสิทธิมนุษยชนและความเสมอภาคกัน พระพุทธเจ้าทรงยอมรับว่า สตรีก็มีศักยภาพและสติปัญญาเท่าเทียมกับบุรุษในการตรัสรู้ธรรม อาจจะกล่าวได้ว่าพระพุทธเจ้าเป็นนักต่อสู้เพื่อสิทธิของสตรีคนแรกของโลก
